Scarification is the process of removing thatch build up and dead organic mass that sits on top of the grass root system.
Too much thatch can lead to the grass being choked so removing this annually is extremely beneficial.
Scarifying can also cut through any lateral growth from the growing season which is preventing any dense growth. Lateral growth is where grass grows along the surface instead of upright, which will eventually lead to ineffective mowing and scalping.
The best time of year to scarify is in the spring or the autumn when growing conditions are at their peak. However, if conditions are suitable in the summer months you would get a quicker recovery time. Some lawns can take up to 8 weeks to recover depending on weather conditions. Watering in dry weather is advised.
